How to Make Coffee with a Chemex®

ABOUT THIS GUIDE

A unique glass brewer that combines science and art, the Chemex® is a great tool that produces a refined cup of coffee.

How to Make Coffee with a Chemex®

Chemex Step 1
STEP 1

Place the Chemex® filter into the brewer

Make sure to leave the thick three-layered side facing the spout.

STEP 2

Wet the filter with hot water

Thoroughly wet the filter to preheat your brewer. When discarding the water, pour it away from the spout.

STEP 3

Add medium ground coffee

Use 9 Tbsp (45 g) of ground coffee for every 24 fl oz (720 ml) of water. Tap gently to even out the grounds and set the scale to zero.

STEP 4

Slowly pour a bit of water onto the grounds

Stop when all the grounds are saturated. Wait 30 seconds to let the coffee bloom.

Blooming helps the coffee release natural fragrances, giving it a fuller flavor.

STEP 5

Slowly pour more water

Starting in the center of the brew bed, slowly pour a pencil-thin stream of water, spiraling outward. Stop when 2⁄3 of the water has been poured.

Wait for 20 seconds

Pause for 20 seconds as the coffee brews, then continue pouring the rest of the water.

STEP 7

Let the coffee drip through

When the coffee stops dripping, discard the filter and gently swirl to experience the nuanced aroma.

Pour & enjoy your coffee at home!

QUICK TIPS

If there’s a thick layer of grounds on the sides of your filter, try different pouring techniques and make sure your pour is even.
