How can this machine make espresso, brewed coffee and milk?

The Verismo® System offers different levels of pressure to extract the right beverage, from high-pressure extraction for Espresso to low-pressure for Brewed Coffee.

What are the different beverages I can make on the Verismo® System?

You can enjoy a wide variety of Starbucks® beverages from the Verismo® System, including brewed coffee, espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, americanos, and much more. Additionally, we bring you blends and single-origin coffees from across our entire roast spectrum—Blonde, Medium and Dark.

What are the different beverage sizes for the Verismo® V brewer?

Espresso = 1 fl oz/30 ml
Brewed Coffee = 10 fl oz/300 ml
Caffè Americano = 6 fl oz/180 ml
Caffè Latte = 6 fl oz/180 ml

How do the espresso and brewed coffee pods compare to what is offered in Starbucks® coffeehouses?

The Verismo® Pods contain the high-quality arabica coffee you love from Starbucks. It is the coffee we source for our stores today, and it is roasted, ground and packaged specifically for single-cup use with the Verismo® System. Then, it is brewed to our unique specifications to deliver the optimal flavor.

I have just bought the Verismo® System. What should I do to prepare the Verismo® V brewer for first-time use?

Please refer to the Quick Start Guide enclosed in your Verismo® V Brewer box or go to Operating Manuals & Warranty to download the Quick Start Guide for your machine. This will take you through the simple steps to prepare your machine for the first use.

Can I use the new pods in my 580, 583, and 600?

Yes, you can use the new pods in your existing Verismo® brewer. The brewed pods will deliver a stronger cup of coffee since they have been developed to deliver an optimal taste for a 10 fl oz cup of coffee. Brewers prior to the Verismo® V dispense approximately 7 fl oz of water. If you have an older machine, we recommend brewing the coffee pod using the brewed coffee button, lift the handle to let the pod drop through, and then add hot water to taste using the hot water button or brewed button. The espresso pods will work the same in older and new brewer models. The pods have been optimized to deliver a great espresso shot, highlighting the signature flavor notes of each coffee. The size of the espresso shot has not been changed.

Can I use old pods in my new Verismo® V Brewer?

Yes, you can use existing brewed pods in the Verismo® V Brewer. The coffee may not be as bold as you would expect since the Verismo® V Brewer dispenses 10 fl oz of water, and our older brewers were developed for 7 fl oz. If you’d like a stronger cup, you can reduce the amount of water that is dispensed by consulting “Programming Pour Size Settings” in the Owner’s Manual.


The espresso, milk, and chai pods are interchangeable.

How long does the coffee remain fresh in the pods?

Coffee pods have a shelf life of 10 months; milk pods have a shelf life of 12 months; chai pods have a shelf life of 11 months. Please refer to the “Best before” date indicated on each pod for optimal flavor and freshness.

How should I store the Verismo® Pods?

For optimal quality of beverages, Verismo® Pods should be stored in a dry area at room temperature. This includes the Starbucks® milk pods.

Troubleshooting FAQs

Why does it seem so hard to close the handle after inserting a pod?

You will feel some pressure or tension as you close the handle – this is normal. The pressure indicates the machine is puncturing the pod in preparation to brew. Also, ensure that there are no used pods in the brewing chamber and that the pod collection container is empty.

Why is there a small delay before the drink is dispensed?

The brewer may take up to 15 seconds to warm up before it begins making your first beverage. The brewer is adjusting to the right temperature to make your beverage.

Why does the Brewed button blink red and Espresso button blink white at the same time?

The brewer is overheated. Switch the appliance off, unplug, and allow the brewer to cool down. After this, plug in the brewer and switch on.

Why does the Brewed button blink red during drink preparation?

The brewer should be descaled. Refer to the section “System descaling” in your owner’s manual or here.

What is happening when all the lights are blinking white?

This means the machine is adjusting to the right temperature to make your perfect drink. Espresso shots and Brewed Coffee require a higher brewing temperature than milk pods. The blinking lights indicate the machine is taking a few seconds to adjust to the appropriate brewing temperature.

Why isn’t the beverage dispensing properly?

Ensure the handle is pressed down completely. If necessary, descale the brewer (refer to the section “System Descaling”)

Why is my Verismo® brewer not brewing as hot as it used to?

The machine may need to be descaled–refer to the section “System Descaling” in your Owner’s Manual or find your Owner’s Manual here.

Why has the beverage volume decreased?

The system may be calcified (refer to the section “System Descaling” in your Owner’s Manual. If the problem continues to occur, please check the cup filling capacity you have programmed. If required, reset the appliance to the factory setting and reprogram as desired (see instructions in section “Programming Pour Size Settings”).

Why aren’t my pods falling through when I open the handle?

Ensure that the handle is opened all the way to dispense the pod. If it doesn’t dispense, gently shake the handle and it should fall through. Do not stick your fingers inside since there are sharp prongs that puncture the pods. Also, make sure the pod container is empty since pods won’t fall through if it is too full. If pods continue to stick in the brew chamber, call customer service at 1-800-334-5553.

Can I reuse pods?

Pods are intended for single-use only. Use the brewed coffee pod only with the brewed coffee cycle and the espresso pod only with the espresso brew cycle. Misuse of the pods can damage the machine.

My brewer ran out of water while I was making my beverage. What should I do?

When the brewer runs out of water, we recommend that you lift the handle to discharge the pod, close the handle, refill the water tank and then press the Espresso button to rinse the system with water. It is not recommended to reuse a pod once you’ve started a beverage as it will not deliver a proper quality beverage.

How do I clean and/or descale my machine? How often do I need to do this?

We recommend you clean your machine every month or every 20-30 beverages. Please follow instructions from the Operating Manual when cleaning your machine. The cleaner that is recommended for the Verismo® V Brewer is the Urnex Full Circle Single Cup Brewer Descaling and Cleaning Liquid. It is available at premium specialty retailers and selected online retailers. We recommend you descale your machine once every three months, depending on the level of water hardness in your area. Please follow instructions from the Operating Manual when descaling your machine. The descaler that is recommended for the Verismo® V Brewer is the Durgol Swiss Espresso Special Decalcifier. It is available at premium specialty retailers and selected online retailers.

Where is the Serial Number located on the machine?

The Serial Number is located underneath the machine, on a white tag. It is the number located underneath the bar code.

Is the water tank BPA (Bisphenol A) free?


Do you have to rinse my model of Verismo® brewer every time it powers on?

We recommend rinsing before and after every use, particularly after using milk and Chai pods. Verismo® brewer models 580 and 583 are programmed to require a rinse prior to use. Verismo® brewer models 600 and V have a rinse button so you can rinse at your own convenience. Rinsing keeps your machine clean and ensures high quality tasting beverages.

How often do I have to clean the drip tray and pod discard bin? Are these items dishwasher safe?

We recommend that the drip tray and pod discard bin be cleaned daily, when in use. Use a moist cloth and if necessary a mild detergent. Do not wash parts of the appliance in the dishwasher.

How can I get bigger beverages from my machine?

The new Verismo® brewed coffee pods make a 10oz cup of coffee.


The standard Starbucks® latte recipe – one espresso pod and one milk pod – creates the right balance of espresso to milk you expect from Starbucks. If you would like a larger latte, you can add another milk pod and espresso pod, which will create a 12 oz latte. Alternatively, you can purchase a Verismo® Milk Frother to customize your milk choice and your latte size.

What happens if I brew the espresso pod first and then the milk pod for a latte?

You will still get a high quality latte. However, we recommend using the milk pod first and pulling the espresso shot second. This method will help ensure there is no residual dairy in the machine after making the beverage, thus helping to ensure the intended machine performance over time. If using the Verismo® Milk Frother, you can pour the shot and milk in in either order.

I cannot fit my mug into the space between the nozzle and drip tray? How can I adjust this?

The Verismo® brewers have a height-adjustable drip tray that accommodates different cups sizes. In order to accommodate larger mugs, you can remove the drip tray and rest your mug on the counter.

Why is there excess liquid in the drip tray & pod discard bin after making a beverage?

There will be residual liquid from used pods in the pod discard bin that causes excess liquid in the drip tray. Please make sure you discard the used pods from the discard bin frequently.

Can I stop making a drink mid-way through the process?

You can press any button to stop your machine mid-way through the process. However, for great tasting beverages, we recommend that you follow instructions in the Quick Start Guide.

Can I repress the button to continue making my drink?

Each time you press the button, the machine will start the new full cycle for the selected beverage.

Why can’t I get the pod discard bin out?

This could be because your pod discard bin is over full. Try moving the drip tray side the side to loosen the bin. We recommend emptying the pod discard bin frequently.

Does fresh or filtered water make a difference in the beverage taste?

Yes, we highly recommend filtered water for better tasting beverages.

Water is not flowing out of my Verismo® brewer, what do I do?

Make sure the machine is plugged in, the water tank is full of water, and prime the unit, follow the steps in the instruction manual on page 9. (This can be accomplished by running the rinse cycle four consecutive times.)

Verismo® Milk Frother FAQs

How can I adjust the amount of foam the frother makes?

For cappuccino-style foam, use the whisk. If you prefer less foam, remove the metal whisk from the frother lid post before pressing the button.

Why does the light in the button flash but the frother doesn’t operate?

If you just recently made a beverage, the frother needs to cool down before making another drink. You can rinse the frother with cool water to cool it down faster.

Why isn’t it frothing milk?

Check to make sure you placed the lid on securely. If the lid is on properly and still doesn’t froth, it may be the type of milk you’re using. Fresh milk is not always consistent and several factors can affect the quality of the foam. Use 2% cow’s milk at refrigerator temperature for best results.


It could also be that the inside of the frother contains milk residue. If this is the case, thoroughly clean the whisk and the inside of the frother.

Why is milk escaping from under the lid?

This means the frother was filled too high. Add less milk to the frother to avoid spilling.

Is it possible to make the milk hotter?

The milk is heated to approximately 165 degrees F to ensure the great froth and taste. Milk proteins start to break down and burn if the milk is over heated.

Sustainability FAQs

What are Verismo® pods made out of? Are they recyclable?

The pod container is made of polypropylene #5, which is recyclable if the lid, filter and coffee are removed. Please check with your local recycling/waste authority to see if they accept this material for recycling and if they accept containers of this size. Unfortunately, at this time the pods are recyclable only in select communities that have appropriate recycling facilities.

Is Starbucks working on a more recyclable option?

The recyclability of Starbucks Verismo® pods is an issue we take seriously. Starbucks is working closely with Verismo® pod manufacturers to find additional solutions.

Does the machine have a standby mode?

Yes, the brewer automatically goes into standby mode after 5 minutes of non-use. As long as the machine is plugged in, it will use a small amount of energy (<0.5W/h). We recommend unplugging the brewer when unused for extended periods of time.

I live in the United States or Canada. What does Starbucks recommend I do to recycle my old coffee maker or my used Verismo® brewer?

Starbucks cares about our environment and strives to engage in practices that help protect our environment. While Starbucks does not endorse a particular method of recycling or disposing of electrical coffee makers, we do recommend that you consult with your local municipality or solid waste utility to learn how best to recycle or dispose of your machine in your neighborhood.
