Whether you’re looking to whip up one of our delicious latte recipes or just in the mood to shake up your morning coffee with a light and fluffy topping, this guide will teach you how to froth milk with whatever tools you have on hand around the house.
Option #1 — Froth Milk in a Mason Jar

-
STEP ONE
Pour ½ cup of the milk of your choice into a mason jar. Ensure you only fill the jar halfway so the milk has enough room to froth and puff up.
-
STEP TWO
Put the lid on the jar tightly and shake vigorously for 20 to 30 seconds.
-
STEP THREE
Remove the lid and place the opened jar in the microwave for 30 to 45 seconds.
-
STEP FOUR
Enjoy frothy steamed milk!
Option #2 — Froth Milk Using a Coffee Press

-
STEP ONE
Pour milk of your choice in a glass or ceramic container and heat to 140ºF. Pour heated milk into your coffee press and make sure there’s enough room for your milk to double in size.
-
STEP TWO
Carefully raise and lower the plunger of your coffee press and work your way up to a vigorous tempo.
-
STEP THREE
Maintain that pace for 30 seconds or until the milk has frothed up until twice its original size.
-
STEP FOUR
Enjoy frothy steamed milk!
Option #3 — Froth Milk Using a Handheld Frothing Wand

-
STEP ONE
Fill ⅓ of a tall mug with milk and heat to 140ºF. Make sure there’s enough room for your milk to double in size.
-
STEP TWO
Insert your frother’s whisk into the milk close to the mug’s base.
-
STEP THREE
Turn the frother on for 15 to 20 seconds while moving the whisk head slowly around the circumference of the mug.
-
STEP FOUR
As the milk begins to thicken, slowly raise the frother so that it’s always just under the top of the froth.
-
STEP FIVE
Once the milk has doubled in size, switch the frother off and remove from your mug.
-
STEP SIX
Enjoy frothy steamed milk!
Option #4 — Froth Milk by Hand
If you don’t have a mason jar, coffee press or handheld frother, you can also froth your milk by hand with a whisk or electric mixer. The steps are similar, but just require a little bit more elbow grease.
-
STEP ONE
Fill ⅓ of a tall mug or bowl with milk and heat to 140ºF. Make sure there’s enough room for your milk to double in size.
-
STEP TWO
With a whisk, use a vigorous back and forth motion to stir the milk until it doubles in size.
-
STEP THREE
Enjoy frothy steamed milk!
